The only weakness is a few confusing scenes - (e.g., an FBI investigator debugs her hotel room without explanation. Now is this a good thing? If I'm afraid of it, then I want to do it. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, one of just many accomplishments.
Week characters, incredibly weak story line, with a last minute attempt to pull it together, which failed to raise any interest. I give one point for the try and one point for the movie itself. If you are into films that are original and make you think as you leave the theater, this is the film to see while it is still in theaters. If you have read Inquisitr‘s recent coverage then you know that before Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij created The OA, they made two independent films together.
As for the Film itself it is not great. If I fly from New York to LA, my immune system takes a hit.
Just too many loose ends here to a semi-interesting story that takes you nowhere. As Sound of My Voice’s co-writers, they intentionally crafted a story that’s like a jigsaw puzzle of modern art — full of odd-shaped pieces and open to interpretation.
Ronstadt came by her love of music easily; her Mexican grandfather was the founder and leader of a large band, and her father, who had a beautiful voice (we hear a sample of it in the doc), was fond of singing on any occasion. He is the one with the data that we really need to make a decision from, one way or another. And that anyone that thinks her BS is legit, deserves to get burnt by her. Like The OA, there is ample room for interpretation in Sound of My Voice. It is a weird little film about a two documentary filmmakers investigating Maggie - a cult leader who claims to have traveled back from the future. An undertaking “the five” must accomplish to prove they believe in Prairie’s story enough to do something else, something more precarious. As I said, what could have been a good movie became not any more than a try for something different.
For someone who loved singing above almost all else, it was a devastating blow. Luckily, these aren't huge gaping holes that make the main story confusing, just details like why the child was acting so strange.
In Sound of My Voice, Maggie tells her followers that she has come to the “past” (their present) to select a group of people she will task with a special mission. I'm not sure what film the other reviewers watched, but without a doubt the worst film I have ever seen. With that in mind… I believe that there are predominately, two ways that you can read this movie. The DOJ agent goes back in time to make sure she doesn’t succeed. EMAIL ME. I thought the movie presented two possibilities: either A) Maggie is insane or B) Maggie is from the future and is the little girl's daughter. In The OA, Prairie tells “the five” of an exotic backstory where she is the daughter of a Russian oligarch, who survives a near-death experience that results in her blindness.

The prevailing creepy tone of the film is supplemented and, at times, dictated by the score, composed by Zal's brother, Rostam Batmanglij, the keyboardist-singer-songwriter of Vampire Weekend, the Grammy-nominated indie band. I just finished watching this movie at home and I must say that it has the qualities of a big production movie. You were not the one that was in the circle with Maggie when she began deep diving into your soul and reading your thoughts and history. Perhaps most satisfying about this film is that it shows that you can make a compelling story come to life on a shoe-string budget. Of all of Batmanglij and Marling’s collaborations, Sound of My Voice bears the most striking resemblance to The OA. You make yourself small, nimble, like the cameras you are shooting on. Ambiguous ending fails to satisfactorily answer ultimate question about cult leader, Excellent looking film but copout on the ending, Marling is something special and a woman to watch, A Decent First Effort at the Conflict between Faith and Reason.
I wanted to like this as i really liked "Another Earth" - but I couldn't. It's on the house. Ronstadt amassed a string of pop hits including "You're No Good," "Blue Bayou," "It's So Easy," "When Will I Be Loved," "Desperado," "Just One Look" and "Hurt So Bad." All I can think is that the justice department lady is also being fooled by a higher source. While many of the strange details and set-ups are left open ended, it's the kind of film that will you have talking with others trying to fill in the blanks long after you've seen it. Fox Searchlight bought this and turned it into a theatrical release where it debuted as a big hit at the Sundance Film Festival last year. The balancing act is whether or not a cult leader, may or may not actually be a time traveler. But the Sound of My Voice (as most of Brit Marling movies are) is a balancing act of a movie. Which means what, exactly?

They claim Maggie is a fugitive and the girl is her daughter, who Maggie lost custody of due to her being a criminal. There is a sense of tranquility that I think people can get from being in an organized group, where a singular leader handles the responsibilities of individual thinking. While the film is a decent first effort by some talented amateur filmmakers, it feels oddly unfinished.

A gun is drawn and at last I thought thee might have been some thrill. The script is a classic presentation of the one of the oldest of cinematic and literary conflicts between faith and reason. The storyline was weak and never went anywhere. Her record company wanted her to go solo, with one of her early backup groups including future Eagles Glenn Frey and Henley.
